Plastic Surgery Advice Australia

So You are Considering Having Plastic Surgery

How to Find the Best Plastic Surgeon Near You

If it was me, I would want to establish a relationship with my plastic surgeon before I commit to a procedure with that surgeon. Why? Just because I need to establish a feeling of trust and understanding right from the beginning.

A Plastic Surgeon will ask you for a referral from your doctor if you don’t already have one. No worries but how do you know who you want to see?

Find Your Ideal Surgeon First

If you live in any of the main cities like Sydney, Melbourne, Perth, Adelaide, Brisbane and the Gold Coast you will have many possible surgeons to choose from. Unless you already know of a particular surgeon from a friends referral or another source you will have to start cold.

You could of course start by asking your local GP who will likely refer you to someone they have previously referred people to and you would expect would have some trust in. However, this person may or may not be a surgeon that you will feel comfortable with.

Start there by all means it may work out fine. My preferred approach is to get straight on to Google and go and check out who is operating in my local area or city. Now, this can also be a daunting task because it can get quite confusing.

What Are The Most Common Types of Plastic Surgery

Starting with the Most Popular Plastic Surgery in Australia

Breast Augmentation or Augmentation Mamaplasty is the enlarging of a woman’s breast by the insertion of breast implants. These implants can be either a saline solution implant or a silicone implant. There are pros and cons to each which you will definitely discuss with your surgeon.

Breast Lift or Mastopexy is performed when women want to lift their saggy or droopy breasts. It is a reshaping of the breasts and involves removing saggy skin and excessive skin and often the repositioning of the nipples. Recovery can take up to a month.

Breast Reduction is also a common procedure by women who feel their breasts are too large. The breast augmentation generally have a relatively quick recover time – only a few days although lifting heavy objects will be restricted for a longer period.

Liposuction is the removal of fat deposits between the skin and the muscle. The fat is literally sucked out by a vacuum pump through a tube. More common with woman the procedures are often performed on the abdomen, hips, thighs, buttocks and upper arms. Surgeons stress this procedure is NOT a substitute for weight loss and it may be the right thing to do to deals with as much of any excess fat by diet and exercise. Depending on the extent of the procedure recovery time could be anything from 1 week to 4 weeks.

Tummy Tuck or Abdominoplasty (also the term Mini Tummy Tuck is fashionable) is when that pesky bump or protrusion in our belly gets flattened. It involves removal of fat, excessive skin and tightening of the muscle. Most popular with women this procedure can take anything from 2 -6 weeks for recovery.

Nose Jobs or rhinoplasty is the reshaping of the nose in some way. Maybe to remove a bump or hump, make it bigger, smaller, wider or narrower or combination of more than one. Rhinoplasty is popular with men and woman. Recovery is usually about 3 weeks with care being taken NOT to bump the nose during healing.

Eyelid Surgery or blepharoplasty is much more common procedure for women. It is performed to remove/remedy those baggy or droopy eyelids by taking out that extra skin and fat. Eyelid surgery can make a huge difference to a youthful appearance. It is possible to have only the upper or only the lower eyelids procedure. Blepharoplasty usually requires from 2 week to 2 weeks recovery. This procedure has nothing to do with improving eyesight.

Facelift or Rhytidectomy is when excess fat is removed, muscles tightened and skin tightened. By far most of these procedures are by women. Takes 10 days to 3 weeks recovery and keep out of the sun for quite a while longer.

Less Common but Popular Procedures:

Dermabrasion is when the surgeon uses a high speed rotating tool to literally scrape off the top layers of skin. Two to six weeks recovery.

Forehead Lift is again much more popular with woman. It straightens out the wrinkles and baggy skin on the forehead. At least 3 weeks recovery.

Hair Transplant is much more popular for men. There are various techniques and usually require several visits over a period of around 18 months.

Ear Surgery or Otoplasty is mostly performed on children who have ears that stick out and the ears are brought back closer to the head. Takes about a week to recovery.

Breast Implant Removal is chosen by some woman who have earlier had implants. About 2 weeks recovery.

Breast Reduction by Men for a condition called gynecomastia which has several possible causes including genetic disorders, hormones, drugs and other courses.Gynecomastia is more common than we might think and apparently effects 40% to 60% of men. Takes a couple of weeks for recovery.

Chin Augmentation or Mentoplasty usually involves inserting an implant into the chin or changing the shape of the chin bone in some way to improve facial symmetry. Slightly more popular for men it takes about three weeks for recovery but numbness may take a while longer to heal.

Cheek Implant or Malar Augmentation is when an implant is inserted below the cheekbone to give the cheek a fuller look. Yes, it’s women who have the most number ofMalar Augmentation. This procedure can cause some swelling which can take weeks to fully heal.

Upper Arm Lift or Brachioplasty deals with the excess fat and loose skin that forms under and around the arm. This is likely to include liposuction and the removal of excess skin. Most popular with woman and requires about 2 weeks for recovery.

Thigh Lift for when those thighs start to get a bit dimply and flabby and involves removing fat and excess skin to reshape those legs. This is most popular with woman.

Lower Body Lift fixes up saggy areas of the hips, thighs and buttocks by removing excess fat and skin restoring a more youthful form and firmness. Needs a couple of months recovery and is more popular with woman.

Buttock Lift renovates the butt removing excess fat and skin and sometimes may involve an implant to give a fuller shape to some areas – most popular with women. Couple of week recovery and longer till the swelling comes down.

What Particular Plastic Surgery Speciality Do You Need

You may start of believing that you only want one procedure. Having said that, you may also want to add something else that is related or could easily be done at the same time killing two birds with the same stone.

There are different kinds of plastic surgeons. There is the plastic surgeon who only performs cosmetic procedures and is distinct from plastic surgeons who perform re-constructive plastic surgery.  This is one of the first distinctions that you need to know because what surgeons advertise can be confusing.

The above is a pretty good summary of the MOST COMMON plastic surgery procedures.
